2009 Ralph Modjeski Award for Excellence in Transportation Design, Preservation and Archaeology

The Lewistown Narrows Canal Park won Preservation Pennsylvania’s 2009 Ralph Modjeski Award for Excellence in Transportation Design, Preservation and Archaeology. Heberling Associates, Inc., PennDOT District 2-0, and The EADS Group, Inc. of Altoona, PA were recognized for their roles in this high-profile transportation project, part of the reengineering and upgrading of U.S. Route 22/322 through the Lewistown Narrows in Mifflin and Juniata Counties.  Preservation Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, spotlight the best preservation projects in the state each year through their awards program.

Completed in June 2008, the Lewistown Narrows Canal Park features a stabilized lift lock, parking and picnic facilities, interpretive exhibits, and a hiking trail along the old towpath. The park was designed to preserve the historic and natural features of this important site and share them with the public.
