Greensburg, KS
Heberling Associates, Inc. recently completed a strategic tourism plan for Greensburg and Kiowa County, Kansas. Funded by the Southwest Community Foundation, the plan is an integral component of the community’s comprehensive recovery plan following the devastating EF-5 tornado of May 4, 2007. The plan included an analysis of both existing and new visitor attractions, as well as a series of goals and action plans aimed specifically at the enhancement and promotion of a sustainable heritage and eco-tourism industry in the region.
Just days after the tornado, the community came together and decided to rebuild sustainably. As a result, “. . . the town has made a remarkable comeback, reinventing itself as a model for sustainable building and green living now recognized around the world. . . .” . Greensburg's new Silo Eco-Home, shown under construction in the photograph above, now houses the Green Visitors Center.
